Our Mission

The mission of Free Horizon Montessori Public Charter School is to:

Nurture and empower students to become responsible citizens and self-directed learners who embrace education as a life-long process,

Provide an education that promotes academic excellence utilizing the Montessori philosophy in balance with the rigor of Colorado State and Jefferson County standards, and;

Help children attain high levels of academic, personal, and social achievement so that they may become successful and constructive  contributors to our community and society.

Our Vision

The Free Horizon Montessori community is dedicated to the inspiration of the innate curiosity of humankind in balance with the discipline of study.  In our school, everyone learns.  We see school as a place to question, a place to risk mistakes, a place to celebrate diversity of thought - all for the sole purpose of a deeper understanding of life's experiences.

Our Founding Beliefs

Founded in 2002, Free Horizon Montessori has rapidly expanded to serving 280 students from all parts of Jefferson County and its surrounding areas.  Our school embraces the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, which is dedicated to an educational model that is challenging, individualized, and has a solid cornerstone of respect and responsibility for oneself, the environment, and those with whom we share the world.

A great benefit of a Charter School is that staff, students, and parents are united in a common vision and commitment to educational excellence.  In as such, we are a collaborative group of parents and educators dedicated to the expansion of the human potential.  The atmosphere is palpable and as you walk in you will see dynamic learners of all shapes, sizes, and abilities, because FHM is a place where everybody learns.  We believe this attitude sets the tone for life-long learning.

Overview of Our Curriculum PDF Print E-mail

FHM's focus in curriculum development is
to provide high interest and strong challenge within a dynamic and experiential structure.manipulatives

Our low student teacher ratio of 10:1 for primary and 15:1 for lower & upper elementary allows for one on one attention for each student.

Our core curriculum includes daily lessons on Math, Reading, & Writing.
These are taught by using small group & individualized lesson plans based on students abilities rather than age. Our classrooms are grouped in 3 year age groups with 3,4,5 years olds forming primary ; 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades forming lower elementary, and 4th, 5th, 6th grades forming the upper elementary.

The students use Saxon Math, and math manipulatives/tools as needed. They augment their writing by journaling and completing research & writing projects using a variety of resources. These culminate in oral presentations to their classmates, sharing what they have learned.
The presentations include their art work, maps and other materials they have made as part of the learning process.

The curriculum begins with the selection of a biome (grouping of plants and animals found in certain regions) and/or continent(s) that will be focused on for the semester. The lessons in history, world culture, art, music and when applicable science are focused on these areas.
