The classroom is a prepared room that contains tables and some chairs, small rugs that are used as work areas, and a variety of tools referred to as manipulatives that students select from shelves. Students are not confined to desks, rather the classroom setting allows students freedom of movement in a quiet and non-interruptive manner. Upon observation, parents will find the room is in order regardless the time of day they may visit, because students learn that putting away their materials is a part of completing their work. Each student meets with their teacher once each week to agree on the activities they will work on the following week . They select activities from each area of the curriculum, using a list of activities aligned with the curriculum . Students use the manipulatives to complete the work that is outlined on their weekly list of activities. Some of these activities involve small groups and others are completed on an individual basis. The teachers are available to present lessons to students in small groups or individually and assist with corrections to completed work. The student is responsible for managing their time to complete the activities each week. Teachers work with each student to assist them in learning these time management and prioritization skills. Our classes are led by teachers who are specifically trained in managing classes of three-year age groupings. The teachers are familiar with the complete range of learning styles including auditory, visual, and kinesthetic, and teach to each style so that each student is ensured comprehension of new ideas. |
